As temperatures are expected to rise in the coming months, thirst quenchers and cooling drinks and snacks become best-sellers again.

Vendor Mercy Eugenio, selling singkamas (jicama) for P80 a bundle at a sidewalk stall in Barangay Tumana, Marikina City, hopes her product would be an ideal substitute for thirst quenching. Singkamas, a root vegetable commonly used as a filler in some dishes, is 90 percent water, thus its cooling effects especially when eaten raw. As temperatures are expected to rise in the coming months, thirst quenchers and cooling drinks and snacks such as the ubiquitous "halu-halo" are sure to become best-sellers again.
