Break-ups, deaths in showbiz

Both deaths and break-ups, two cycles of life, are generally and commonly regarded as negative, but no, they aren't simplistic, in the equation of the yin and yang for they carry with them depths and widths of circumstances in the cosmos or palpable reality.

They are processes to go through to achieve a certain degree of fulfillment, especially living, relating to people, or romancing a beloved to realize good things in life.

Many situations, finite or not, are involved here and the plethora of events make or break a person by his or her choice or by fate in the interplay of the mundane or the quotidian.

The pursuit of the human spirit or the flesh, therefore, is a rebirth in any form and to create a new one, whatever it may be, to experience another set of dialectical occurrences consciously favoring the good ones to achieve Nirvana, in many ways.

In Show Business, there are talks that 2018 Miss Universe Catriona Gray and Sam Milby are having problems with their love relationship.

In an official statement issued by their common management Cornerstone Entertainment, it shed light on the premise of a rumored split.

“We at Cornerstone, as the talent management agency representing artists Sam Milby and Catriona Gray, would like to address the recent rumors surrounding their relationship. While it is true that Sam and Catriona are currently facing some challenges in their relationship, they are actually working on resolving these issues together.

We kindly request that everyone respect their privacy during this time as they navigate through this situation. We appreciate the concern and well-wishes from all those who have shown support for the couple.”

What causes the problems? Conflicts? Differences?

Or we can only speculate or paint an incomplete picture of the situation until Sam and Catriona themselves come forward to disclose the real thing.

Can it be recreated?

It is often said that relationships—friendship, engagement, marriage, etc.—in showbiz are as good as their last togetherness.

That there isn't forever.

How true must this be?

Is it really, typically the way of life of television, film, theater, and social media celebrities?

Or is it just a matter of choice or determination of each party involved?

That showbiz friendships are just fleeting and it depends on the vested interest or pure intentions of the persons involved?

How come the married life of, say, Fernando Poe, Jr., and Susan Roces had endured the test of time until each of them died in their time?

Or the union of Barbara Perez and Robert Arevalo last with the death of Robert just like the marriage of Boots Anson Roa and Pete Roa that after several years of Pete's passing, Boots remarried, that time Francisco "Soc" Rodrigo, Jr.?

The married status of Perla Adea and Romy Mallari has been successfully working or death was the culprit in the happy and everlasting love between Letty Alonzo and Mario Montenegro?

Tirso Cruz III and Lyn Ynchausti are growing old together as well as Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong is getting closer and sweeter with each passing day.

Manilyn Reynes and Aljon Jimenez' bond is getting stronger.

After seven years of friendship, Dominic Roque and Bea Alonzo finally got engaged in 2022 but broke off in 2024 for reasons unclear until now.

Let them be for the truth will unravel itself in proper time while other love affairs are created and going through processes of struggles to become one again.

In death, there is rebirth in any form or another Jaclyn Jose, who died recently, the actress and the person are reborn, maybe in another body, in another realm.

Jaclyn’s daughter-actress Andi Eigenmann immediately went to Manila from Siargao (where she lives with partner Philmar Alipayo and their kids Lilo and Koka plus Andi’s daughter with Jake Ejercito, Ellie) and held a press conference to announce the demise of her mother.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the untimely passing of my Nanay, Mary Jane Guck, better known as Jaclyn Jose, at the age of 60, on the morning of March 2nd, 2024, due to a myocardial infarction or a heart attack..."

Shorts: Everyone is sending their eulogies on Jaclyn’s passing, on them, the former member of the prestigious Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) and founder of Young Critics Circle (YCC) Mike Feria, Mauro Feria Tumbocon, Jr. in real life who is now based in the US: “Remembering Jaclyn Jose 91964-2024) actor, film. television, stage

Cannes Best Actress, MA' ROSA, 2016 (Dir. Brillante Mendoza)

“’Takaw Tukso’ (dir. William Pascual), unexpectedly became my baptism of fire, my first test of wills, being a new member of the original Philippine critics group, the MPP in 1986, when I advocated for the film's inclusion as nominee for its annual Gawad Urian, and for Best Film (for Ultravision) and Jaclyn Jose as Best Actress (along with Pascual as Director and Dante Mendoza as Production Designer). Eventually, all four won in their respective categories, their first career honors.

“I now forgot how it went, how I was able to convince the 8 other members of the group, but I did it, considering that just a year earlier, Jaclyn Jose got her first Urian nomination for Lino Brocka's ‘White Slavery,’ I thought it was easy sailing, but her other film for the year, Sixto Kayko's ‘Private Show’ (now more known by his real name, Chito Rono), his debut film, met some grumbles among moralists in the group.

“Flash forward to 1993, in February, I would receive a call from Jaclyn, that was just two days before I left for the US - she would bid me goodbye, telling me in jest, hindi ka na babalik (you won’t return anymore), I know, and we laughed; and that she would not be able to join in a Despedida Los Banos trip, hosted by her manager, Ed Instrella with his other talents (Cherry Pie Picache, Julio Diaz, Gardo Verzosa, Alan Paule and a few more).

“Since then, Jaclyn Jose has become one of the more respected actors in the country, her win as Cannes Best Actress for Mendoza's ‘Ma 'Rosa, only cemented her position as one of the country's most important film artists, ever.

“From the tempestuous, fierce women characters of her early years, to cite, Rono's ‘Itanong Mo sa Buwan’ (English title: Moon Child), 1988; Lino Brocka's ‘Macho Dancer,’ 1989 to her amazing comedic turns in Emmanuel de la Cruz's ‘Sarong Banggi’ (One Night), 2005; Victor Villanueva's ‘Patay na si Hesus’ (Hesus is dead), 2016; and Joel Lamangan's ‘Anak ng Macho Dancer’ (The Son of a Macho Dancer), 2021, even her cameo appearance in still to be released, Adolfo Alix's ‘Kontrabida,’ Jaclyn Jose has been brilliant.

“Jaclyn Jose, you will be missed.

Fare thee well, Jane.”

In memory of my dear friend… Jaclyn Jose is one of the most respected actresses in the film industry in the Philippines and the first Filipina actress to win Best Actress at the Cannes International Film Festival for the film “Ma’ Rosa.” Directed by Brillante Mendoza. She was the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win this prestigious honor.

These photos were taken during my vacation in the Philippines last January 1, 2024, on my birthday when Coco Martin surprised me with a birthday party and invited our friends who were with us during his movie launch for “Masahista,” directed by Brillante Mendoza.

RIP JANE. We love you, Jane! Thank you for the decades of friendship, support, and love you’ve given us…
